My phone started ringing as I was carrying two full mugs over towards Stephen and Iâs desks and I hastily put them down.
âMitchell speaking,â I said.
âWe need you to come over here right away, please.â I hadnât had the chance to check the caller ID before I picked up and I couldnât immediately place the frantic, female voice coming over the phone.
âSlow down,â I said, cutting them off. âWho is this, please?â Stephen was sitting at his desk, watching me curiously.
âOh, Iâm sorry, itâs Alicia Kelley. My husband is here. Lawrence is missing. Youâve got to find him.â
My stomach sunk. âLawrence is missing,â I repeated, partly to make sure Iâd heard right, and to let Stephen know what was going on. âLet me put you on speaker. My partner DI Huxley is here with me.â
I put the phone down on the desk and Stephen scooted closer, his brow furrowed with obvious concern.
âAlicia, when did you last see him?â
âLast night. He wasnât here when I turned up this morning!â Alicia said, and I could hear from her voice how panicked she was. âThe nurses didnât see him leave, and the doctor didnât check him out. Heâs meant to stay in for another couple of days, doing his physio.â
âI see,â I said, glancing over at Stephen. âAnd youâve tried calling him?â
âOf course!â she said sharply. âThe call doesnât go through at all. He must have it turned off, or itâs broken somehow.â
âAlright,â I said, keeping my voice calm. âWeâll be over there as soon as we can. Please stay at the hospital.â
âWe will,â Alicia said, before hanging up.
âNever boring around here,â I muttered, snatching up my things. I tipped my coffee into a travel cup in my desk drawer, snapping the lid on before we headed out of the building.
âYou can say that again,â Stephen agreed.
We got into the car, Stephen in the driving seat and me sipping my scalding coffee. Stephen looked over enviously.
âI should get one of those.â Heâd had to leave his tea mostly undrunk.
âYou should.â
I fiddled with the radio as we drove over, but my thoughts were on Lawrence and why he mightâve run off. But we wouldnât know any more until we arrived at the hospital and started looking around and asking questions, so instead, I said, âHowâs your daughter?â
âBetter,â Stephen said, taking us around a sharp corner. I was almost used to his driving by now, and his liking for screeching to a stop right before the red traffic lights didnât alarm me quite as much. âHer temperatureâs down, and sheâs set to leave the hospital tomorrow if all goes well.â
I cracked a grin. âThatâs great news.â
He nodded, looking relieved. âYeah. Sheâs still on some heavy antibiotics, and sheâs coughing, but sheâs a lot better. Now we know itâs asthma, weâre hoping we can keep it more controlled in the future.â
I reached over to pat his arm. âIâm sure you will. Knowing what the problem is half the battle, right?â
He laughed quietly. âGod, I hope so.â
We were getting close to the private hospital, and he pulled into the car park.
